Sold by a well-known traditional Buddhist crafts shop in Koyasan (a sacred mountain and World Heritage site in Japan), this bell is used in Japanese Buddhist rituals. It has a five-pronged handle that resembles a vajra, a symbol of power and wisdom in Buddhism. The bell produces a deeper, more mysterious sound that lingers for longer than the other bells offered here (because of the greater size and thickness of this bell), and is said to drive away worldly desires and evil spirits, purify the air, and calm the mind. It can be used for chanting, prayer, cleansing or warding off evil. The item is about 12 cm in height and 4.7 cm in diameter, weighs 138g, and is made of brass.
This “family” of bells come in 3 sizes (12cm, 12.8cm, 13.5cm) with the larger the bell, the louder and more lingering the sound.
