This beautiful print represents Jizo, an important and beloved Bodhisattva or “saint” in Mahayana Buddhism. Most prominent in Japan today in the Pure Land and Shingon schools of Buddhism, Jizo is the patron saint of expectant mothers, women in labor, children, firemen, travelers, and pilgrims.
Printed on standard-size Shikishi paperboard, which originated over a thousand years ago in Heian Japan, and which is still used for traditional painting, writing, calligraphy, illustrations, autographs, waka/haiku poetry and more.
