This beautiful print represents Kobo Daishi Kukai (774 - 835 CE), the founder of the Shingon school in Japan. Born in Shikoku, he traveled to China where he learned Chinese Vajrayana Buddhism under the monk Huiguo. After returning to Japan, he founded the Shingon sect as well as the famous Shingon temple complex at Mt. Koya in Wakayama Prefecture.
Printed on standard-size Shikishi paperboard, which originated over a thousand years ago in Heian Japan, and which is still used for traditional painting, writing, calligraphy, illustrations, autographs, waka/haiku poetry and more.
