This beautiful print is used in the Shingon Esoteric Buddhist tradition as “Ajikan” meditation: sitting with the back upright, breathing in a natural rhythmical way, the practitioner meditates while watching the letter “a” (which is a manifestation of Dainichi Norai) in the Siddham Sanskrit alphabet, located inside the Gachirin (a perfect circle meant to represent the full moon, and the Buddha’s perfect and all-encompassing knowledge), on a lotus flower. Ajikan is practiced by Shingon monks as a method to refine the mind.
Printed on standard-size Shikishi paperboard, which originated over a thousand years ago in Heian Japan, and which is still used for traditional painting, writing, calligraphy, illustrations, autographs, waka/haiku poetry and more.
