Product details

This beautiful Buddhist statue is made in Takaoka, the largest traditional copperware and ironware production area in Japan, and famous for its Buddhist statues, altars, and other crafts. Each statue is made using high pressure die casting, which results in a smooth and luminous surface, followed by finish work done by a skilled craftsman.

The statue is of Ucchusma, a Vidyārāja (“Myo” in Japanese), or guardian deity (a manifestation of the Buddha) in Mahayana Buddhism. In Japan, Ucchuṣma is venerated in several schools of Buddhism, including Tendai, Shingon, Zen and Nichiren. He is recognized as a guardian of the bathroom, where his effigy is often present. He is known to the general public for his powers of purification of the unclean.

Steeped in Mahayana Buddhist iconography, this statue is both a work of art, and also a religious object for believers in Japan.
