This beautiful traditionally done Japanese Buddha statue is of Shaka Nyorai, the principal image of the Soto Zen and Rinzai Zen schools of Buddhism in Japan, perhaps the most famous forms of Japanese Buddhism in the rest of the world.
Soto emphasizes Shikantaza, meditation with no objects, anchors, or content. The meditator strives to be aware of the stream of thoughts, allowing them to arise and pass away without interference. Rinzai is characterized by placing kōans as the object of zazen meditation, with shikantaza ("just sitting") less emphasized, but still used.
Made of fine-grained Japanese Cypress (hinoki), this piece slowly turns more brown as the years go by, with a feeling of increased profoundness meant to occur. Perfect for a Japanese style altar, or as an object of decoration for those interested in Japanese Buddhism.
The hexagonal shape of the statue pedestal is said to represent the "six ways" of the six worlds of reincarnation in Buddhism.
