The wide temperature variations between day and night and between winter and summer in this southern highland zone create a unique tea profile that makes Kirishima-grown teas and Kagoshima teas generally very popular in Japan.
Because the tea leaves are roasted, Hojicha tea has low-caffeine content, a toasted, slightly-caramel flavor profile, and is popular as a late afternoon and evening tea.
